History of Malachite Green

In 1992, seafood, mostly fish contaminated with malachite green was a health risk. It didn't cost as much for it to be manufactured so that is why it is being used. When places like, Hong Kong would get fish from China and Taiwan they would find malachite green in that fish. In June 2007, the Food and Drug Administration blocked the importation of several varieties of seafood due to continued malachite green contamination. It is also banned in the use of aquaculture. Malachite green caused carcinogenic symptoms after doing an experiment on a lab rat. One 1983 study found Malachite Green to be teratogenic in trout and rabbits. Abnormalities involved the skeleton, heart, liver and kidneys. Malachite green is not related to the malachite mineral.

Uses and Importance

Malachite Green is used in dyes and is used in aquaculture. The dyes that malachite green are used for are silk, leather, and paper. Malachite green is active against fish eggs, it will contaminate them. It c

an also be used as an antibacteria or parasiticide against fungi in fresh water aquaria. The importance of Malachite Green to fight against fungi, but it is very harmful to humans if they eat fish that have been contaminated with Malachite Green.

Where?

This organic compound is found in fish treated with malachite green, and this finding is the basis of controversy and government regulation. It is obtained as a green material, it is not extremely solid, it is mostly like soil. It is also obtained in a liquid form when it is used as an antibacteria to fight against fungi. It does not have anything to do with Malachite which is a also green but is a solid.

Chemical Properties/Reactions

Green crystals with metallic luster, there is no odor or taste to this compound. Malachite
Green is a basic dye. Which are salts of the colored organic bases containing amino and imino with colorless acids, such as sulfuric acid.
